Constantly seeking the truest expression of the land

Daniele Grasso at La Briccolina winery is one of those "if you know, you know" winemakers in Serralunga, Piemonte.  There is no doubt Daniele, and the La Briccolina winery has a great future ahead.

You will find the La Briccolina winery in Serralunga, beyond the Falletto vineyard and adjacent to Ornato.  In the family since 1922, is at the top of the Briccolina vineyard, a natural amphitheatre with southwest and southeast exposure, 350 m above sea level, with a mix of limestone and marl soil.

Tiziano Grasso learned the ropes from Danilo Drocco, and for 50 years he sold the grapes another noticeable wine producer in the area, Pio Cesare. Tiziano’s son, Daniele, spurred the family to vinify and bottle some of their own grapes, from a selected 0.4ha (out of a total 5.5ha) from the oldest part of the vineyard (50+ year old vines). The first commercial bottling bearing their label was 2012.  At a mere 3000 bottles.

Tiziano Grasso died in a tragic work-related accident in May 2017, and Daniele and Simona (Tiziano’s wife) have carried the winery on their shoulders ever since.

Today Daniele and Simona retain about 20% of their grapes, and for now, they make just the one wine, Barolo Briccolina.  They follow sustainable winemaking practices, both in the vineyard and in the cellar.  Fairly long maceration (25 days), 26 months in Garbellotto botte grande (25 HL), followed by 5 months in cement, and 14 months in bottle.
